IT’S one of the biggest cities in the world, housing one-third of Australia’s entire population in a fraction of the space.

And with Manhattan acting as one of the showbiz capitals on the planet, it’s no surprise that celebrities abound. But despite popular opinion, celebrities aren’t roaming the streets in full public view, ready to snap a selfie.

And unlike Los Angeles, you won’t find any star maps here. So who has the biggest and baddest Big Apple pads? We’ve compiled some of our favourites, and where you can find them.

ANNA WINTOUR — 172 SULLIVAN STREET, GREENWICH VILLAGE.

You might recognise the Vogue editor-in-chief’s 19th-century townhouse from the 2009 documentary, The September Issue . Wintour lives here with her longtime partner, Texas billionaire Shelby Ryan. Wintour is known to throw a celeb-studded bash here, so keep an eye out for the likes of Michelle and Barack Obama. Wintour shares an exclusive residents-only park with the other townhouses on the block.

CAMERON DIAZ, 204 WEST 18TH STREET, CHELSEA.

Cameron Diaz reportedly beat off Gossip Girl star Blake Lively for this up-market Chelsea pad, which set the actor back an impressive US$9 million (AU$12.8 million) in 2013.

TMZ reports Diaz spends a further $5000 in maintenance and real estate taxes.

“You could basically drive a bulldozer in your apartment and your neighbour wouldn’t hear or feel it,” Real Estate agent Michael Stern told the New York Daily News.

“I knew we had something that no one in New York had — an absurdly solid building.”

CARRIE BRADSHAW — 61 PERRY STREET, WEST VILLAGE.

OK, we know Carrie Bradshaw is just a character in a television show, but this is one NYC landmark you can’t miss. While on the show Bradshaw lived in a $700 a month rent controlled apartment on the Upper East Side, the facade is actually downtown, in the West Village. The brownstone is, in reality, a four-floor home complete with five bedrooms, three bathrooms, six fireplaces and a backyard.

CRISTIANO RONALDO — TRUMP TOWER, 725 FIFTH AVENUE.

Last month The Post reported the Real Madrid soccer star bought-up big for a 2,509 square foot loft in Trump Tower, setting him back $US18.5 million (AU$26.3 million). Could New York be the next big move? Reports circulate the superstar is looking to join a US-team after his contract expires in 2018.

DONALD TRUMP — TRUMP TOWER, 725 FIFTH AVENUE.

When he’s not offending immigrants or women, Trump spends his downtime at Trump Tower, home to the Trump empire’s business offices. His three-level penthouse was designed with the Palace of Versailles as inspiration, according to the New York Daily News .

“The opulent residence is one of the most valuable in New York City and would likely sell for up to $100 million if it were to come on the market today,” it read.

KATIE HOLMES — 201 WEST 17TH STREET, CHELSEA.

Katie Holmes has returned to the neighbourhood where she fled after splitting with Tom Cruise in 2012. In July this year, the New York Daily News reported the Dawson’s Creek actor signed a short-term lease for this US$25,000/month ($AU35584) penthouse, which she shares with daughter Suri. The penthouse boasts “three bedrooms, two bathrooms, floor-to-ceiling windows . and a small landscaped outdoor terrace with views of the Empire State Building and the World Trade Center”.

MADONNA — 152 EAST 81ST STREET, UPPER EAST SIDE.

Madonna’s luxe Upper East Side mansion set her back a whopping US$32 million (AU$45.5 million) in 2009, a bargain considering it was originally listed for $45 million. Reports suggest the Rebel Heart singer paid in cash.

Amenities within the 12,000-square-foot house include a 38-foot-wide drawing room overlooking a garden; a formal dining room, garden terrace, two kitchens, two libraries, a sitting room; a wine cellar and, no surprises, a gym.

But proving money doesn’t buy you hygiene, a rat was seen scurrying behind her during a live interview broadcast from the material girl’s home in May this year. Awks.

MARISKA HARGITAY — 45 WEST 84TH STREET — UPPER WEST SIDE.

The Law and Order: Special Victims Unit actor paid US$10.7 million (AU$2.4 million) for this six-bedroom, nine-bathroom mansion in 2012.

According to The Post , the 5.5m-wide home “has an elevator, an eat-in chef’s kitchen and double-height ceilings. There’s also a sunroom with two terraces, plus a large garden with a built-in barbecue grill”.

NICOLE KIDMAN — 200 ELEVENTH AVENUE — WEST CHELSEA.

When she’s not tending to her Nashville farm with husband Keith Urban, Nicole Kidman spends her time in the tenth-floor apartment of this West Chelsea high-rise, the Sky Garage.

Kidman and Urban bought the duplex apartment in 2010 for $12.5 million.

TAYLOR SWIFT — 155 FRANKLIN STREET — TRIBECA.

Taylor Swift made the move to the star-studded district of Tribeca from Nashville in March, 2014, and she’s been hosting her star-studded squad in the US$19.95 million (AU$27.7 million) condo ever since. It was previously owned by Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson.
