New York City will use a self-administered test to diagnose Covid-19, a move meant to reduce the amount of exposure health care workers have to the disease, Mayor Bill de Blasio said.

The new test involves a shorter swab, which patients administer themselves, and a saliva sample, the mayor said. New York’s eight Health and Hospitals testing sites will be the first to participate, he said.

Also, de Blasio said, as part of New York’s testing expansion, the city is hiring 1,000 contact tracers. They will be tasked with tracking down the people who have come in contact with patients who have tested positive for Covid-19.
