Unless you’re seeing a show, there’s really no need to go near Times Square.

In honor of the 15-year anniversary of September 11, last week we told you about the 20 most iconic tourist attractions in New York City . However, we wanted to clarify that “iconic” doesn’t necessarily equate to “must-visit.”

As you’re likely aware, there’s an endless amount of things to do, see, experience, and taste in New York — and even if you spend a lifetime there, you’ll never get to it all. With that in mind, how can you possibly make even a dent in your to-do list?

The best way to start is by planning to skip a few of these seemingly important tourist attractions. You might feel fulfilled after walking across the Brooklyn Bridge, strolling through Central Park, or paying your respects at Ground Zero (especially since these activities are generally free), but some other typical tourist activities aren’t worth the money or effort — and a couple are total rip-offs!

Use this list to help trim your travel plans down to a manageable amount, and also make sure you don’t miss anything truly important while visiting the Big Apple.
